Calvine High School 2006 Creek Steward
Urban Creek Council of Sacramento is pleased to recognize
the ongoing efforts at Calvine High School for its care
and educational uses of Strawberry Creek.
Faculty members Tony Lederer, Deb McGregor and Ron Eggert
share the responsibility of curriculum development and
would like to increase their school's use of Strawberry
Creek as an outdoor classroom for courses in Science, Math,
Economics/Government, and English. In addition, they also
plan to participate this spring on Creek Week and/or
Earth Day.
They agree that not only is Strawberry Creek an excellent
resource for their school's science curriculum, it is
also their most cost effective option. Given the creek's
close walking distance to Calvine High School, savings in
transportation and time alone will justify their efforts
in course development and substitute instructors. Tony
forsees multiple classes with as many as 70 students per
day visiting the creek and participating in outdoor
instruction.
Projects discussed to date include performing climate
related observations to compare morning and afternoon
temperatures observed by various class groups; Tony
also plans to grid out and catalogue existing creek
fauna and flora. This information will be used and
tracked over subsequent school years to observe shifts
in vegetation or invasion of non-native species of
grasses, bushes or trees over future years.
You can visit a gallery of their
field photos from their last visit to Strawberry
Creek on October 13, 2005, when they participated in World
Water Testing Day activities.
Pictures include the Strawberry Creek area, Calvine Road and Calvine High School.
